Optus and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) are fighting it out in court following the 2022 Optus cyberattack. With court documentation seeming to show that the attack may not have been as sophisticated as Optus claims. According to the ACMA Optus customer data was accessed due to inadequate security of an API domain and its main domain. It may not have been a sophisticated hack.

One wonders the impact of the hack of the company, with Optus reporting a loss of $480million AUD for the 12 months to March 31st 2024. With penalties of $250,000 per contravention and 3.6 million events, one wonders the effect on Optus should it loss the court case.
