One does not no where to start with this post. Other than with ‘What a disappointing indictment of cybersecurity risk management for the UK economy’. One has been saying for many years that cybersecurity risk management is a critical requirement for nation states. More so as cyber attack frequency, complexity and severity of impact has risen over the past 5 years. Nations such as the U.S, EU and Australia have taken a firm stance on cybersecurity risk management and regulation. Introducing regulation that will effect UK companies trading with, have facilities in, or are covered by regulations in those jurisdictions.

The report released by the Department of Science Innovation and Technology(DSIT) paints a poor picture of the state of UK corporate cybersecurity. (https://lnkd.in/ey9VDC-x)

One accepts the sample size is low, but one has a few data points that correlates and reinforces the statistics presented by DSIT. Namely the percentage of companies in the UK that have taken up cyber essentials and cyber essentials plus certifications; the UK Parliamentary report on cybersecurity released in December 2023 and the organisations and people that I speak to daily in the UK, that do not realize they are covered by U.S DoD cyber regulations or will be impacted by EU NIS 2 and DORA.

What is distressing is when one examines regulations outside of the UK, one understands the predicament that UK industry faces, in closing the gap between the current levels of cyber maturity and those required by partner nation regulators.

How is the UK National Cyber Security Centre closing the cyber compliance gap with the UK government for UK industry. That ranks with the programs partner nations are adopting?
