What’s going on with cybersecurity in the UK?

What’s going on with cybersecurity in the UK? We’re either very good at it, or we’re just ignoring the inevitable fact. Recognized by some, but not all our partners, that cyber is a significant issue for Critical National Infrastructure and the UK Economy?

The report for the ‘Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy’ makes it clear that the UK is as suspectable to attacks on its Critical national Infrastructure, as is any Nation State. When one reads paragraph 37 of the report and the program of work set out by NCSC I see ‘Offensive’, reactive cyber. Where’s the UK’s ‘Defensive’ cyber strategy, where’s the regulation that focuses UK CNI on the cyber Identification, Detection, Protection, Response and Recovery strategy and program – See EU NIS 2.

All this comes at the time when the head of the NCSC is moving to another post. One asks the question, ‘What is the UK’s national cyber strategy?’ Partners including the U.S, EU 27 nations and Australia have managed to issue reasonable cyber strategies in 2023, moving ahead in some cases and laying the foundations with cyber regulation of their CNI sectors.

When one reads the report, one sees a situation where the UK is 5 steps behind our partners in recognizing the problem, behind with cyber strategy and 10 steps behind with delivery. Delivery that takes several years to achieve.
