The effect of the August 2023 PSNI data breach has been far reaching. With 10,000 employees personal information being published online, forcing some Officers to move house for security reasons, mental health has worsened and Officers have resigned from the force.

The report made clear that the leak “was not the result of a single isolated decision, act or incident by any one person, team or department,

“It was a consequence of many factors, and fundamentally a result of PSNI as an organisation not seizing opportunities to better and more proactively secure and protect its data, to identify and prevent risk earlier on, or to do so in an agile and modern way.”

That does not sound unfamiliar. The review said that PSNI could face monetary penalties between £24 million and £37 million. That if it were to materialize puts the force between a rock and a hard place as its money that should be used for policing, law and order and protection and not fines.
