This week I attended a presentation in London given by the Deputy Director of the NSA George Barnes and members of CISA. CNI cybersecurity is a subject that is of concern given our dependence on the energy grid and the impact we feel in the event of a cyber attack.

Recent energy issues in the U.S were caused by physical damage to power infrastructure. They demonstrate the fragility of power infrastructure to targeted specific attacks. A report to the Senate Republic Policy Committee(RPC) entitled ‘INFRASTRUCTURE CYBERSECURITY: THE U.S. ELECTRIC GRID’ in mid 2021 highlighted the U.S electric grid is vulnerable to cyberattacks. Are we starting to move away from the Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) debate that cyber has often focused on? The recent physical attacks on U.S power networks highlights the challenges all nations face, more so if their energy infrastructure is digitally connected. The cost of remediating the effects of a cyber attack maybe significantly less than the impact of a successful attack.
