Data and cybersecurity compliance is a National Security conversation. While the implementation of data security legislation such as GDPR is important for the protection of PII, alignment with international standards and partner nations is an important consideration for National Security. If we have the opportunity to set our own course that is admirable, but we should always ensure that we are working to secure our national interests when they are linked to those of our partners.
Data cannot be managed as an island, unfortunately it often moves across national and international boundaries unimpeded, that is simply globalization. Data security is a cat that was let out of the bag years ago and will be difficult to put back in, without a coordinated approach by partner nations.
