A proposed legal outcome that is worth taking note between the Federal Trade Commission and CafePress (https://lnkd.in/eASeBRgd). Following CafePress data breach incident in 2019.
‘In addition to a fine of $500,000, the Settlement requires CafePress to undertake a variety of data security and privacy practices that will have consequences for the company and other online businesses for years to come. Significantly, the Settlement marries privacy and data security practices to create a framework to protect consumer information. It is also instructive on the need to place consumer interest in prompt and thorough identification, investigation, and notification of a breach over the business inclination to avoid possible negative repercussions as a result of the breach.’
The takeaway is that CafePress, they will have to implement a framework for data protection and security. That will have independent auditors examining the implementation and progress. It also highlights the role of M&A and due diligence following CafePress acquisition by PlanetArt in 2020.
