Well worth reading, a report by the US firm Cyberreason who have been tracking a Chinese threat actor called Winnti, also known as APT 41. Whose primary focus is IP theft, in support of state sponsored hacking groups. Attributing Winnti to the persistent theft of intellectual property and sensitive data under Operation ‘CuckooBees’ from technology and manufacturing companies mainly in East Asia, Western Europe, and North America.

It appears that the threat actor may have gone undetected from between 2010 and 2019. Cyberreason believes that ‘The Winnti Group is one of the most prolific and successful threat actors in existence. Winnti has a history of attacks and campaigns supporting Chinese state-sponsored espionage activity and financially-motivated attacks.’

Whilst we focus on Ransomware and other financially destructive threat vectors IP is being syphoned off for competitive advantage, be it military or corporate. A very good reason why the implementation of the DoD DFARS/ CMMC program is critical and the SECs cybersecurity risk management proposal is of such importance in enforcing cybersecurity risk management compliance.
