The cyber attack that affected Oiltanking Deutschland last week, initiating force majeure at its 11 German terminals, and Mabanaft Deutschland that also had to declare force majeure for the majority of its inland supply activities in Germany continues. It appears to have spread, causing chaos at key European oil terminals in Amsterdam-Rotterdam and Antwerp (ARA).

The latest large-scale ransomware attack has targeted oil port terminal software in at least 17 ports in Western Europe, re-routing tankers and significantly disrupting supply chains,

The attack is reported to be by BlackCat, aka the new ALPHV ransomware operation, rumoured to have been set up by ex REvil members. A CaaS that appears to pay its affiliates well and in this case seems to have targeted CNI at a time when heating oil, aviation and diesel fuel is needed. If BlackCat is indeed a Russian hacking group, one wonders about the timing of the attack.

To take a topical military expression. The problem with ‘right of bang’ is that we are always reacting to the next incident. Failing to focus on ‘left of bang’ will prove very costly, incidents are getting bigger, bolder and more expensive. CNI focused attacks are currently the most costly.
