Following the cyber-attack on Equifax back in 2017 Moody’s downgraded part of their credit rating twice, concerned that cashflow will become an issue as the company deals with the attack. That reportedly cost Equifax over $1.5Billion to resolve, including fines and court mandated remediation costs.
Capital markets are vulnerable to cyber attacks. Cashflow and corporate sustainability are impacted by cyber, more so with the development of ransomware as a threat vector. All credit rating agencies are actively focusing on cyber risk oversight and assurance. Along with the SEC and its ESG regime, I expect that the move by Moody’s to invest in companies which can provide this capability is one we will see more of.
