Securing DIB data is fraught with challenges and no easy options. Building a DoD cloud for the DIB for specific contracts and defence systems places a burden on cloud Infrastructure. With single points of compromise, likely to require Co-Lo for resilience, to absorb capacity then the fibre is cut outside the facility. It would still be difficult to secure the final mile and require end-to-end data security from cloud to the shop floor and machine tool. Any Cloud provider will want guarantees of a decent revenue stream before committing to building anything and Public Private Partnerships are fraught with dangers as politics has a very short window of opportunity. (minimum of 4 years).

Continuing as is, is not an option. For example SMEs (SMBs) will find it hard to deploy the 130 CMMC level 3 practices. One simply has to look at the regulated banking sector, where the big banks routinely spend $500Mn/ year to deploy similar standards to NIST SP 800 – 171 for cyber risk mitigation.

A solution has to be found, cyber threats won’t be going away, with common adversaries targeting defence data through any weak link. Which at present is the global DIB, who is a custodian of defence data from the drawing board to the scrap yard.
