The National Institute for Science and technology (NIST) released Revision 5 of its NIST 800 – 53 standard this week. A tomb of a document at 483 pages, but one often seen as a foundation for security practices and controls.

However, what caught my attention is the role that NIST is playing by putting in place the Cyber research infrastructure for manufacturing in the US. With $11Mn in awards as part of the Manufacturing Extension Partner (MEP). Supporting partners to add new capabilities and solve ‘new manufacturing problems’. This includes the development of regional Centers of Excellence for cyber security competence and expertise.

Providing manufacturers with goto institutions for cyber security in manufacturing, which has to be a good thing.
