The Network, Information and Security Directive has been adopted by the EU council and comes into force in August 2016. This little known piece of legislation compliments the European Data Protection Regulation which comes into force in May 2018.

The directive aims to harmonise network and infrastructure security across the EU. Requiring greater co-operation across the EU member states and the implementation of a cyber strategy. It will impose information security obligation on operators of services like energy, transport, banking, health, water, distribution and digital infrastructure
