It may not be you who is losing ‘your’ PII. It maybe your supplier who is at risk and you may still be liable. It doesn’t matter how securely you manage personal data, if you are classed as the data controller, then you may still be liable for the loss of the personal data you have collected and subsequently passed onto a third party. The cloud exacerbates this, as companies rely more and more on cloud service providers to manage the crown jewels, critical corporate and personal data.
