However it is framed, the US owns the Western Internet, and there’s not a lot that can be done about it in the short term. The major cloud providers are US; the main AI developments are US, and cybersecurity vendors, yep, you’ve guessed it, are primarily US.

On top of that, we have sleepwalked into digital dependency. The move to cloud, mobile, and data consumption, which has driven digital over the past 10 years, has enabled the main AI players to hoover up readily available information into huge data sets, which we call LLMs.

The question should not be about what we have lost, but rather how we can benefit from the revolutions that sit at our feet. Once upon a time, the UK sat on the 1st industrial revolution, then passed the baton to the 2nd and 3rd.

It’s better to drink with the devil you know and a friend than drink with one you do not know and who may be your enemy. Data is national security, and the data horse has bolted, and it ain’t getting back in the stable today, no matter how much money you have.
