Of course cyber is a serious business, it’s a national security issue and has grave consequences for industry and Government funding is always useful. But when one reads that the government will turbo-charge the sector, which will produce home-grown jobs and protect growth in other sectors by improving cybersecurity. It begs the question how?Yes cyber presents an economic opportunity for the UK. But as the recent attacks on M&S, Coop and Harrolds demonstrate, the UKs cyber posture is not that good and there’s a few zero’s missing off the back of the funding. One only has to look at EU, and US cyber strategy and regulation to understand that the UK is lagging a long, long way behind. On a recent call with a US federal agency, discussing AI strategy, cybersecurity risk and Governance. The gap in leadership thinking between the UK and US was eminently clear, especially its approach to cybersecurity strategy, work force management, AI governance, leadership, planning and funding. US investment in cyber and AI makes the UKs investment look small. We want the benefits of the cyber industry to reach into communities all across the country. And that is why cyber will be a prime target for economic growth in the upcoming industrial strategy, as the government secures Britain’s future. One is intrigued as to why there’s such a divide between reality, political statements, and the dire need for the UK to deliver cyber strategy and regulatory convergence with its partners.A simple example is the US DoDs CMMC (DFARS) program. Speaking with the UK Defence industry recently, there’s still an abject lack of understanding of the program and its effect on the UK Defence Industry Base, who supply the US. In of itself demonstrating the gap between making the UK a powerhouse and the realities on the ground, in small part demonstrated by the M&S hack.@Thaddeus Dziekanowski Brian D.
