This week the White House announced the outcome of a meeting held on the 24.09.21 between the US, Indian, Australian and Japanese Heads of State, called the Quad leaders Summit. The summit discussed several initiatives including infrastructure, climate, education, space, emerging technologies and cyber.

Does the move signal the development of a stronger security relationship between key powers on the East Coast of the U.S? Partner nations which have an interest in their protection from growing threats within the APAC region?

The US cyber regulatory environment is developing quickly. FISMA is being reimagined, CMMC is under review, Cyber-SCRM is in the draft 2021/2022 National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA) and the SEC is examining cyber risk governance regulation. There will be increased and enforceable cyber regulation in the US, affecting those who trade with the U.S.

The Quad group and NATO announcement demonstrates that the US is looking to agree common cybersecurity standards and a common language to manage cyberspace, be that NIST, ISO or a derivative.

What does this mean for international trade, when trading partners agree to set cyber standards that include requirements to secure IP critical to national interests? When partner nation cyber standards are not appropriate and regulated. A case demonstrated by the DoD’s proposed CMMC programme that is under significant pressure from Congress, to protect IP critical to national security domestically and internationally.
