A dog which had plenty of bark, but in the end not allot of bite. When GDPR finally came into force in 2018, there was great fan fair of the potential fines which could be imposed for failing to abide by the regulations, all in all 2% – 4% of global turnover. Figures which for some global firms could have been a sizable reminder that the protection of consumers PII is an important component of everyday operations.

In both of the recent high profile UK cases the published fines have been less than those originally published and by a long way. The ICO recently released a Notification to fine British Airways £20Mn, down from the original assessment of £183MN (https://lnkd.in/dGnwDUx.)

With the release last week of a Notification to Fine Marriott of £18.4MN down from the original £99MN. Are we in danger of taking what is a fit for purpose regulation. One which enforced the rights to have our personal information secured by those who are happy to consume it and sending the wrong message?

Lets not forget, there is no difference between securing personal data from theft and securing the enterprise from cyber attack.
