We’ve heard a lot recently about Frontier AI models and how advanced they are, especially relating to cyber. National and international security agencies raised significant concerns earlier this year about the ability of the latest Frontier models to automate the cyber kill chain. Now we are starting to see these automated attacks out in the wild, as reported by the Financial Times earlier this month and TechRadar.

Autonomous cyber attacks using AI are now being used, and as they start at a nation-state level, it takes no time for attacks to work their way down the food chain to proxies and cyber criminals.

Of concern is not only the autonomous nature of the hack, but the speed and versatility that these attacks can take. Their ability to use many different agents with specific abilities, at capacities and speeds humans cannot match, makes them extremely dangerous. As in this instance, moving succesfully across Taiwanese government agencies.

We must also remember that we are only at the start of the AI journey. As AI innovation advances, what will this mean for the next generations of AI models? Given our generally poor standards of cybersecurity.
